Fundamentals of Art
How do lines, shapes, forms, color and texture define the images and spaces surrounding us? How do styles of artistic expression from different cultures and times impact the styles of today? Students will explore the seven elements and six principles of art and art history.
Prerequisite: None
One semester
Fundamentals of Drawing
Students will explore methods for drawing from sight and imagination using pen and ink, pencils, charcoal and chalk. Students will study from such masters as Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci.

Ceramics
Students will explore a variety of methods—including molds, draping, pinching, coiling, slabbing and throwing on a potter’s wheel—to create decorative and functional pieces.
Prerequisites: Fundamentals of Art, Fundamentals of Drawing
One semester
Lettering and Printmaking
Students will have an overview of the history of the written word and will explore calligraphy and some elements of graphic design. Two-thirds of the course will be dedicated to the study of making prints using relief and etching processes.

Painting
Students will learn to paint using tempera, watercolors and acrylics. Subjects of their paintings will include still-life, landscape, an expressive self-portrait and an abstract piece.

Sculpture
Students will learn to use the techniques of modeling (adding) and carving (subtracting) to create 3-dimensional forms using materials such as paper mache, clay, cardboard and wood.

Independent Study
Upon approval from the instructor, students will plan a course of independent study that will result in the production and presentation of a personal portfolio of work. Course may be taken for AP credit.
