College Scholarships

The St. Croix Guidance Department and ISD 197 Guidance Counselors have information on sources of applications for college scholarships.  Students and parents are encouraged to research available scholarships through the Guidance office, as well as online sources.

New Listings (5/11/09)

Abbott & Fenner Business Consultants are pleased to be able to continue with their annual scholarship program. They will be awarding up to $1,000 to the winner(s) each year. Scholarship Deadline - June 20, 2009.
Application Process: Students will submit an essay on one of the two topics that appear on the scholarship page of their web site: http://www.abbottandfenner.com/scholarships.htm. Full details are available on the site.

Heartland Credit Union
Heartland Credit Union offers one $1,000 and two $500 scholarships to Heartland members.  Apllication deadline is May 23, with online voting June 1-3.  Apply at www.heartlandcu.com.  Heartland Credit Union is located at 5500 S. Robert Trail, Inver Grove Heights, MN.

Our Savior's Christian Preschool
Seniors who attended preschool at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Rosemount, MN, have been accepted at a college, university or vocational school, have an active membership at a Christian chruch and maintain a GPA of 2.75 or above are eligible to apply for a $500 scholarship.  Applications are available in the guidance office, and the
deadline is April 30, 2009.

Salvation Army Pearl Linden Scholarship
The Linden Scholarship Committee is seeking students who are committed to improving their communities through active volunteer service and who permanently reside in Washington, Ramsey, or Dakota counties in Minnesota, maintain a minimum 2.0 GP and demonstrate financial need.  Recipients must be enrolled in a 2-year or 4-year college or vocation school. Apply online at

AES Scholarship Renewed - 2009
The consulting firm of AES Engineers is committed to continuing its support of higher education by providing scholarships to deserving students. To be eligible the student needs to answer one of the essay questions that they will find on our site at http://www.aesengineers.com/scholarships.htm.

AES believes that achieving a high grade point average should not be the only criteria for determining who deserves to be helped. For that reason this scholarship will be awarded on the basis of character, as determined by evaluating the essays that are submitted. Amount of award: $500.00. Deadline for entry: October 6, 2009.

Minn. Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship application and accompanying information can be found at: http://education.state.mn.us/MDE/Academic_Excellence/School_Choice/Robert_C_Byrd_Honors_Schlorship_Program/index.htmlThe program is open to students in their senior year in high school. The deadline for application for SCLHS students is March 6, 2009. SCLHS administrators will select one application from those received by March 6 and submit it to the scholarship selection committee.

        IMPORTANT:   The Minnesota application process has changed and there are new requirements. Review the application form and accompanying materials carefully. No previous version will be considered. The application must be returned to the student’s school by the school’s deadline. Only the school’s nomination can be accepted by this department on or before the deadline stated above.

Minnesota Timberwolves Fastbreak Foundation
Five $2,000 scholarships available to graduating seniors in the states of Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Applications are online at http://www.timberwolves.com/community and must be postmarked by March 6, 2009

Anna M. Kuhl Scholarship Fund
Residents of St. Paul or a nearby community who are enrolled or plan to enroll in one of a select list of undergraduate institutions (list is available in the SCLHS Guidance office) are invited to apply for the Anna M. Kuhl Scholarship. The award is based on character and integrity, academic performance, and financial need. See Guidance office for information.

Upper Midwest Chapter of the National Television Academy
Students intending to pursue a major in broadcasting, television or electronic media with qualities of leadership, creativity, and passion, and at least 3.0 gpa, are encouraged to apply for $2,500 scholarship.  Apply online at www.NTAUpperMidwest.org by March 13, 2009.  Award is contingent on acceptance for admission to an instiution offering a broadcasting, television or electronic media curriculum.

Salty Earth Pictures, Inc. of Lake Mills, WI is offering four $500 scholarships for 2009-10 for current high school seniors who seek to use their talents in areas of media production (i.e., photography, videography, cinematography, writing, directing, producing, acting, graphic design, editing, and technical support, etc.)  Applications and required attachments must be received no later than April 1, 2009.  Applications are available in the Guidance office.

IEA's 2009 Bruce Bomier Scholarship
Institute for Environmental Assessment, Inc., awards three $2,000 scholarships to seniors who are pursuing an environmental, science, engineering, health and safety, or industrial hygiene career at any eligible post-secondary school in the US.  Applications are due February 27, 2009, and are available at www.ieainstitute.com (click on "Hot Topics").

State of MInnesota offers the "Achieve Scholarship" for students who graduate after January 1, 2008. Earn $1,200 for the school of your choice.  Visit

Kohl's Kids Who Care Scholarships
Kohl's plans to recognize more than 2,000 kids age 6-18, for good deeds of community service such as tutoring, cleaning up a park, organizing a food drive. To nominate a deserving youth/child, visit www.kohlskids.com. American Association of University Women (AAUW)
Four $3,000 scholarships renewable for 3 more years will be awarded to senior women from St. Paul public and private schools. Women are selected on the basis of financial need, SAT/ACT scores, scholastic achievement, school and community activities. See the Guidance office for details of the application process, which includes nomination by SCLHS;
deadline is March 15, 2009.

The B. Davis Scholarship is named for a colleague who devoted a great deal of energy to creating the donor's website and has since moved on to other projects. Twin Cities Marathon, Inc. Scholarship
Student athletes of all abilities are encouraged to apply for a $5,000 scholarship to be awarded to one high school graduating male and female.  Eligible applicants must have participated in cross country and/or track running events, have a GPA of 3.0 or above, and live in or attend a high school in the Twin Cities 11-county metro area.  Selection criteria include academic performance, community service, running accomplishments, and an essay.  The application is available from the Guidance office and the deadline is postmarked no later than March 1, 2009.

AXA Achievement Community Scholarship
Download an application for a $2,000 scholarship at www.axa-achievement.com, apply by February 15, 2009. Winners are diverse but share these characteristics:  ambition and drive, determination to set and reach goals, respect for self, family adn community, and the ability to succeed in college.

American Cancer Society 2009 Youth Scholarship Program
            for Young People Who are Cancer Patients/Survivors
The American Cancer Society announced the availability of a limited number of college/continuing education scholarships for students under the age of 25 who have been diagnosed with cancer before the age of 21, are a legal resident of Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota or Wisconsin, accepted to attend an accredited two- to four-year university or vo-tech school, and who complete the application process.  Applications are availabe from the Guidance office.  The deadline for all applications is March 15, 2009.  All applicants will be notified mid-May.            

The Coss Family Foundation Scholarship, sponsored by The Saint Paul Foundation. Awards range from $500 to $3500 based on financial need and level of course enrollment.  Eligibility requirements are: high school senior graduating from a public or private high school in one of 7 counties, including Dakota and Ramsey, Minnesota, and planning to enroll at least half-time (6 credits) in an undergraduate course of study at an accredited degree granting two- or four-year college or university, including technical colleges.  Application postmark deadline is February 10, 2009.

Constance Currie Scholarship
Scholarship awards range from $300-$2,500.  Applicants must be seeking a first-time post-secondary education and (1) have lived, worked, or volunteered within St. Paul's West Side Community (zip code 55107) at some point in their lives; or (2) been actively involved with Neighborhood House or the West Side community.  Current holders of the Currie Scholarships are eligible to apply for renewal. Funds can be used for any school-related expense including books, transportation and rent.  Completed applications and all additional required documents must be postmarked no later than March 6, 2009.  Applications are available in the Guidance office.

Southern Twin Cities REALTORS Charitable Foundation Scholarship
Eligible seniors must reside in Dakota, Goodhue, Scott or Rice County of Minnesota and plan on attending a 2- or 4-year college, community college, university, or trade school beginning in the fall of 2009. Recipient will be selected on the basis of academic achievement, school activiies, community service, and written essay. Application forms are available in the Guidance office and require a completed form, written essay, and two letters of recommendation submited by Friday, March 13, 2009.

AFL-CIO Minnesota
Five $1,000 available to eligible high school seniors.  Applicants must be a dues-paying member (for at least one year) of a union affiliated with the Minnesota AFL-CIO or the dependent of such a member; must be planning to attend a post-secondary institution or trade school within the State of Minnesota; and must have at least a "B" average. Winners are chose by lot from entries received by April 30, 2009.  Application forms are available from the Guidance office or at www.mnaflcio.org.

Minnesota Association of Townships
Six $1,000 scholarships to students currently in 11th GRADE in Minnesota.  Winners will be chosen based on a written essay.  All applications for the 2009 awards must be submitted by May 1, 2009. Information is available at
www.mntownships.org; applications are available in the Guidance office.

BigSun Scholarship
                
The BigSun Organization is proud to be able to help young athletes succeed in their academic 
                pursuits. We are offering an annual scholarship to a deserving student. All student athletes 
                are eligible for this award, regardless of which sport they are participating in.

KFC Colonel's Scholars Program
               KFC Colonel's Scholars Program is dedicated to assisting students with financial need who plan to pursue a bachelor's degree at a public institution within their legal state of residence. For requirements and to apply for scholarships up to $5,000 per year, go online at www.kfcscholars.org between December 1, 2008 and February 10, 2009.

Minnesota Women's Golf Association Foundation 
                Four $3,000 scholarships will be awarded to senior girls residing in Minnesota and planning to enroll in a four-year college program the year their application is submitted.  Skill or excellence in the game of golf is not a criterion, but candidates shall demonstrate an interest or involvement in the sport.  Details of requirements and the application form are available in the Guidance office.  Deadline for application is 4:30 pm March 31, 2009.  


American Heart Association - Scholarships for high school seniors and college freshmen,
sophomores and juniors who are studying health, science or medicine in a
Minnesota school. Each scholarship will allow the recipient to explore the field
of cardiovascular research by working in a Minnesota research lab during the
summer months. 

        Northwest Airlines Pilots' Wives Club - Two $1,800 scholarships 

        The Veterans of Foreign Wars - One $1,270 scholarship

Toyota Community Scholars
                Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc. awards 100 renewable scholarships valued at $10,000-$20,000 payable over four years to seniors with a 3.0 GPA and a record of school and community service.  For details, visit www.toyota.com/community. High schools nominate one student from their senior class.  Information and application is available in the Guidance office.  Nominations must be postmarked by December 1, 2008.

Elks National Foundation & Dakota County Elks Most Valuable Student Scholarships
                The Elks National Foundation will offer 500 awards nationally ranging in value from $4,000 to $60,000.  Dakota County Elks 2832 will offer two scholarships of $250 each.  These awards are based on scholastic ability, leadership and financial need.  Applications are available in the Guidance office or online at
www.elks.org/enf/scholars and the deadline is January 9, 2009.
