Developmental Reading


Students who have struggled with the language arts in the past will experience success as they apply reading, writing and listening strategies in a variety of real life situations.
Prerequisites: Recommendation of elementary school principal or junior high principal; standardized test scores
Two semesters


Basic English (English 2)

Students learn to use reading strategies to comprehend and evaluate a variety of genres. Through written and oral activities students respond to the literature.
Prerequisites: Recommendation of elementary school principal or junior high principal; standardized test scores
Two semesters


Fundamentals of English (English 3)

Students will learn and study basic grammar skills and be introduced to a variety of written literature such as short stories, plays, poems and essays. Throughout the course learners will be encouraged to evaluate, analyze and apply knowledge to all genres through class discussions, presentations, journal work and written compositions.
Prerequisites: Recommendation of elementary school principal or junior high principal; standardized test scores

Speech (English 4)


Students develop their oral communication skills in this class, with an emphasis on organization and presentation of information and opinions. Speeches include demonstration, persuasive and sales talk. The semester culminates in a series of debates.
Prerequisite: Fundamentals of English (English 3)

Grammar and Composition (English 4)


One semester of grammar applied to promote correct and effective writing skills. Students incorporate advanced grammar into creative, persuasive and research writing projects.
Prerequisite: Fundamentals of English (English 3)

American Literature and Composition (English 5)

This course places an emphasis on writing effectively and improving composition for various purposes as students survey the variety of genres of American Literature since the early 1600s to the present. Continued emphasis is placed upon grammar, usage and vocabulary expansion.
Prerequisite: English 4 or instructor’s approval
Two semesters


British Literature (English 6)

This survey course samples a wide variety of prose and poetry from the beginnings of British literature in Beowulf to writers of the twentieth century. Students also read a British novel of their choosing and prepare a written report on it.
Prerequisite: English 5
One semester


Drama (English 6)

This course delves into Sophocles and the classical beginnings of theater, Shakespearian tragedy and comedy, and twentieth-century drama. The semester project is a series of written and oral group presentations of plays.
Prerequisite: English 5

AP English Literature (English 6)

This course prepares students to take the College Board Advanced Placement Exam in English Literature and Composition. It covers a wide range of prose, poetry, and drama, and features regular practice in both the essay and multiple choice sections of the AP test. Assigned summer reading is required.
Prerequisite: B average or better in English 5

Desktop Publishing/Yearbook

This course is designed to offer sophomores, juniors and seniors the opportunity to produce The Shield, St. Croix’s yearbook. Through the use of Jostens Yearbook Avenue, an on-line service, students become familiar with desktop publishing, especially in the areas of layout design and caption writing.
Prerequisite: Fundamentals of English (English 3)

Journalism

This intensive English and writing class will introduce students to mass communication. Students will produce the school newspaper and assist the yearbook staff.
Prerequisite: Must be a junior or senior

ESL I Reading

Through a variety of reading experiences in the major content areas, international students will improve vocabulary, comprehension skills, study skills, speaking and listening skills.
Prerequisite: SLEP test score of 30

ESL I Grammar

International students develop the ability to construct and convey meaning through writing, listening, viewing, speaking and reading; enabling them to access, analyze, evaluate and apply knowledge and experience for a variety of purposes, audiences and situations.
Prerequisite: SLEP test score of 30

ESL II Literature

International students are exposed to the gamut of authors from early Greece through the twentieth century with an emphasis on multicultural literature. Vocabulary growth and development is enhanced through the exploration of root words and affixes. Students are encouraged to respond to the literature through written and oral presentations.
Prerequisite: SLEP test score of 70
Two semesters

ESL II Grammar and Composition

Students will learn and study written English to assist them in their studies and spoken English to enable them to enhance their communication skills.
Prerequisites: ESL I, SLEP test score of 70
