Science Department
Physical Science
Students learn basic concepts, theories and principles in chemistry and physics through reading, investigating and analysis. Students solve problems creatively, think critically, work cooperatively in teams and learn proper lab techniques.
Prerequisite: None
Two semesters
Biology
This course exposes students to debates, discussions and hands-on activities such as projects and dissections to understand the natural world. Topics include genetics, creation, evolution, vertebrates, the human body, ecosystems, viruses, bacteria and classification.
Prerequisite: None
Two semesters
Chemistry
Students study the interactions and structure of matter at the atomic level and above. Students learn to conduct experiments, work with the organizational and mathematical tools of chemistry (such as the periodic table and formulas) and communicate chemistry effectively.
Prerequisites: Physical Science
Algebra II (recommended;may be taken concurrently)
Two semesters
Accelerated Chemistry
This class moves at a faster pace and covers more material than Chemistry. Students extend their learning of organic chemistry, equilibrium, and nuclear chemistry.
Prerequisites: Physical Science
Algebra II (recommended;may be taken concurrently)
Two semesters
Physics
This course introduces students to the laws of mechanics and dynamics of motion. Each unit begins with a lab, which introduces the formulas and concepts to be studied.
Prerequisites: Algebra II
Two semesters
AP Physics
This course is designed to replace an introductory physics course in college. With a passing grade on the AP test in May, a person may earn credits from the college they wish to attend. The coursework is rigorous and will include mechanics of motion, dynamics of motion, momentum, optics, electronics, magnetism, waves, fluid and thermal physics, and atomic and nuclear physics.
Prerequisites: Advanced Math and Accelerated Chemistry
Two semester
Geology
This course introduces students to the earth and the changes that have taken place on the earth. Major units include minerals, rocks, earthquakes and volcanoes.
Prerequisite: Biology
One semester
Environmental Science
Students investigate major environmental problems and their causes, critique current environmental issues, and develop a greater appreciation for the environment. Major units include ecosystems and how they work, and biodiversity and how people rely on and benefit from it.
Prerequisite: Biology
One semester
